Cahree Myrick, a 7th grader at Roland Park EMS, became the first player from BKCL to win an individual USCF National Champion when he captured the U-1000 section at Supernationals in Nashville in May. Cahree started playing chess as a 1st grader at the Green School and was a BKCL Citywide champion as a 5th grader in 2015.
All five BKCL schools that sent teams to the Greater Baltimore Scholastic Chess tournament on December 16 took home team trophies. This event is the first "major" scholastic chess tournament of the 2017 -18 season and featured 229 players from across Maryland and Virginia. Cross Country EMS, Mount Washington EMS and Baltimore Montessori EMS (photo to the left) all took first place in their division. The Green School and the Crossroads School also earned team trophies in their sections. Amari Bailey of Cross Country was the champion of his section, while Leo Burnham of Mount Washington, Sawyer Ross of Roland Park and Naomi Salazar Alvarado of Baltimore Montessori all tied for second in their sections. It was a strong showing by BKCL players to get the chess season started well.
